When Le Marché was first launched in 1997 Wealden District Council suggested that some stall holders from Forges-les-Eaux be invited. Forges is in an area called Le Pays de Bray with which Wealden is linked. Following the success of that initial market both towns decided that they were interested in a more formal relationship and discussions took place which resulted in a twinning link being established at a signing ceremony in Forges in May 1998.

Over the succeeding 19 years the relationship has gone from strength to strength. Traders have come to Le Marché each year and for some years stallholders from Heathfield and the wider East Sussex were invited to a European Market over there. This arrangement is currently on hold. Every year, also, there have been group visits each way and many friendships have been established. A range of sporting exchanges have also taken place. At the moment this involves Cross-in Hand Tennis Club, Heathfield Rugby Club and Waldron Croquet Club. In the past show jumping teams and the bridge club have also been involved. A new development has been a link between Heathfield Choral Society and La Chorale in Forges and this shows every sign of developing well. Sadly, the link between Heathfield Community College and the College Saint Exupery does not currently take place but Broad Oak Primary School has made an e-mail link with the Primary School in Forges.

All in all the Twinning Association has created a flourishing and beneficial link between our two towns, thanks in the first place to Le Marché. For up to date news or if you interested in learning more about the Twinning Association then please contact the Chairman sheiladrennan@btopenworld.com
